OSX versions to try: Jas 10.5.4 (SSE2/SSE3) and iDeneb v1.4 (OSX 10.5.6)
If not included with above mentioned releases, try VoodooPS2Controller in order to keep using the “ps2 connected devices”.
Also added an extra 256 MB PC3200 DIMM, replaced the 40GB HD with a 250GB HD and a wireless network adapter from Level One (Ralink chip).
Started 7/5/09
Installed Jas with the following options:
- StageXNU kernel
- AC97 audio
- ICH 7
- JMicron chipset
- Ralink RT2500
The result of this was:
- No sound
- No Wired/Wireless network
Installed iDeneb with the following options:
- No kernel selected (Default is Vanilla)
- PS2Fix for ACPI kext 10.5.6
- AD 1981
- Chipset ICHx Fixed
- Broadcom 5784M_5787M
- Ralink RT2500-RT73-USB
Result: No post
Next: as before, except for Chipset JMicron
Result: No boot
Next: as before + kernel VooDoo selected
Result: No boot
Next: as before, but now used kernel SSE3 and for audio AC’97
Result: No boot
Next: as before, but now with kernel Speedstep
Result: No boot
Next: as before, now with kernel Sleep, back to AD 1981, chipset JMicron AND ICHx
Result: Booted (due to both chipset drivers, I think). But neither sound, nor ethernet (wired / wireless)
Next: as before, but with AD 1981 AND AC’97, and kernel Vanilla. No ethernet driver
Result: No post (No Vanilla for me …)
Next: as before, but now kernel Voodoo, and no wireless driver
Result: Booted, but no sound & ntw and lots of errors in syslog. (Voodoo kernel issue?)
Next: AD 1981 AND AC’97; kernel SSE3; chipset JMicron AND ICHx; Broadcom 5784M_5787M and RT2500
Result: No post
For now:
- No Vanilla or SSE3 kernel
- Must use JMicron AND ICHx
Next: as above, but now with kernel Speedstep
Result: Booted, with sound*, no ntw, and no sleep
* because I enabled it in BIOS !!!
Next: as above, now with kernel Sleep, all of Ralink and no Broadcom 5784M_5787M
Result: Booted OK, After adding the AppleBCM5751Ethernet.kext, some weird behaviour appeared of the wireless card and ethernet. I did get some internet access through our neighbours unprotected accesspoint.
Next: as above, but now no Ralink and because Sleep didn’t work, I add EHCI USB Sleep Enabler
Result: Booted ok, everything is working fine except for wireless. Sleep doesn’t work either.
Next: as above, but now replaced Ralink adapter (Level One) with Linksys WMP54G (Broadcom 4306).
Selected Broadcom in Wireless-menu.
Almost there …
Result: All OK !!
Well … almost.
- Ethernet not Gigabit but 100Mb
- No video playback with DVD-player or VLC
- Sleep still not functioning
All in all, not bad. And I’m satisfied, close to 100%
… downloading a .dmg with Safari, mounting … freeeeeeeez !!
Next: need the ‘Seatbelt-fix’. So again, I have to reinstall …
Result: Mounting .dmg’s is OK now.
I’ll leave it as it is for now. If someone has any tips for the last 3 issues, please post them in a comment.
– One more try
:
Options used:
- Kernel Voodoo (but Speedstep was working fine too)
- Chipset: JMicron & ICHx
- Sound: AD 1981 & AC’97
- Network: ethernet AppleBCM5751Ethernet & wireless Broadcom
- Fixes: Seatbelt & EHCI USB Sleep Enabler
In case this fails I can restore to previous install, because I made a safety copy with CCC on a FW-HD.
Result: Not any different than previous install.
And more: Added to the com.apple.Boot.plist in order to get the native monitor resolution :
<key>Graphics Mode</key>
<string>1280×1024x32@60</string>
Cleaning up a bit:
To hide some files, I created a file at root-dir, named .hidden, and added:
var
etc
tmp
boot
For playback of XviD and alike with Quicktime, I installed Perian.
[Update : 29-05-2009]
Today, I bought a NVidea 6200 AGP Low Profile videocard.
After seating it in the AGP slot, booting from iDeneb DVD, selected only NVkush to be installed.
After the reboot, QE and CI were enabled.
No need for Perian anymore … VLC is working fine now.
